Material Efficiency: Reducing Waste and Enhancing Quality

Have you measured your corporate greenhouse gas emissions?

Greenbridge’s Green Emergent Training (GET) Method™ for an ISO 14001 based EMS will help Walmart’s supply chain define the environmental significance of greenhouse gases within their organizational and operational footprint as defined in the Aspects & Impacts element of the standard. Measuring the energy and greenhouse gas in Walmart’s supply chain can help find opportunities to cut fuel and utility costs, leading to lower customer prices.

Greenbridge’s GET Method™ for ISO 14001 EMS delivery is grant-funded throughout the US. These government funds are specific to Greenbridge’s training program.

Have you opted to report your greenhouse gas emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)?

ISO 14001 specifies companies develop approaches to manage external stakeholder inquiries and expectations. Publicly reporting emissions through the Carbon Disclosure Project demonstrates commitment to external stakeholders, and stresses commitment to strategically addressing climate change and risks. Greenbridge’s GET Method™ addresses internal and external communication under the standard.

What is your total annual greenhouse gas emissions reported in the most recent year measured?

Greenbridge’s GET Method™ for developing an ISO 14001 EMS offers a framework to establish environmental objectives, targets and performance metrics that would be tracked, monitored and reported.

Have you set publicly available greenhouse gas reduction targets? If yes, what are those targets?

As noted above, ISO 14001 requires that companies consider how to report key environmental issues, methods for achieving reduction and control of environmental impacts, and a framework to define reduction targets.

Material Efficiency: Reducing Waste and Enhancing Quality

If measured, please report the total amount of solid waste generated from the facilities that produce your product(s) for Walmart for the most recent year measured.

Greenbridge’s GET Method™ for an ISO 14001-based EMS will help Walmart’s supply chain define the environmental significance of material resources used (for instance in packaging) and solid waste generated within their organizational and operational footprint as defined in the Aspects & Impacts element of the standard. Measuring solid waste streams and evaluating packaging requirements for products stocked on Walmart shelves improves operational efficiencies throughout the product value chain, thus leading to lower customer prices.

Have you set publicly available solid waste reduction targets? If yes, what are those targets?

The ISO 14001 standard specifies requirements for companies develop approaches to manage external stakeholder inquiries and expectations. Our GET Method™ will focus training participants in developing approaches to internally and externally communicate results in achieving specific environmental objectives and targets.

If measured, please report total water use from facilities that produce your product(s) for Walmart for the most recent year measured.

Greenbridge understands the critical importance of the water “footprint” in an organization. Thus, in keeping with the ISO 14001 standards emphasis on use of water resources, Greenbridge’s GET Method™ will help Walmart’s supply chain define the environmental significance of water resources used throughout the life cycle of a product or process.

Have you set publicly available water use reduction targets? If yes, what are those targets?

The ISO 14001 standard specifies requirements for companies to develop approaches to manage external stakeholder inquiries and expectations. Our GET Method™ will focus training participants in developing approaches to internally and externally communicate results in achieving specific environmental objectives and targets.

Natural Resources: Producing High Quality, Responsibly Sourced Raw Materials

Have you established publicly available sustainability purchasing guidelines for your direct suppliers that address issues such as environmental compliance, employment practices and product/ingredient safety?

The ISO 14001 standard specifies that companies establish a means to identify critical environmental suppliers and vendors, and establish methods to control the effects of their activities, products and services of the company. This includes all persons “working on behalf of the organization”. Typical supply chain risk containment approaches include use of vendor questionnaires, qualification scores, environmental preferable purchasing policies, and development of environmentally focused purchasing specifications.

Have you obtained 3rd party certifications for any of the products that you sell to Walmart?

ISO 14001 is the ONLY international environmental management system standard, and is considered by some to be the “gold standard” of certifications. Within the certification process an ISO 14001 registrar certifies the standard is met. Furthermore, the certified company performs and documents internal audit activities and every 3-years they must become recertified. Like its counterpart, ISO 9001-2008, the ISO 14001 standard is designed to help organizations identify supply chain efficiencies, improve quality of the product through environmental footprint control, and ensure that resource and materials are sourced and products made produced. While other certifications or labels are widely recognized (like FSC, EcoLogo, Green Label), these are usually product specific or limited to certain countries.

People and Community: Ensuring Responsible and Ethical Production

Do you know the location of 100 percent of the facilities that produce your product(s)?

With an ISO 14001 based EMS, organizations (through advanced procurement processes) can track suppliers and vendors, with a key focus on locations of environmental suppliers and vendors whose work can have a material impact on operations. As such, Greenbridge has developed a Supply Chain Environmental Management System. We provide a framework for Walmart and its suppliers to segment their supply chain by location (domestic and International), type of product produced and whether they are certified under the ISO 14001 standard.

Before beginning a business relationship with a manufacturing facility, do you evaluate the quality of, and capacity for, production?

The ISO 14001 standard specifies approaches that our clients should consider take to query and reinforce the importance of environmental sustainability within their operations. Through survey and validation tools developed during interactive ISO 14001 training sessions, our clients will be able to assess (and in some instances qualify) supplier conformance to company supplier expectations.

Do you have a process for managing social compliance at the manufacturing level?

A supplier questionnaire can be developed to capture social sustainability related issues, including employee wellness, workforce training/education, community development, and resource management, that would resonate with Walmart to further its sustainability index scoring initiative.

Do you work with your supply base to resolve issues found during social compliance evaluations and also document specific corrections and improvements?

The ISO 14001 standard focuses heavily upon addressing concerns of interested parties, including communities in which they operate. Greenbridge views “social license to operate” as a key component of a company’s commitment to sustainability. A substantial amount of time is spent in our training sessions devoted to addressing external, community focused aspects of company operations.

Do you invest in community development activities in the markets you source from and/or operate within?

Greenbridge’s GET Method™ will help clients identify community outreach approaches designed to engage the company in social aspects of sustainability.
